Mono-R works surprisingly well back in the day, one of the top online players was almost exclusively mono-R. UR control, because Horned Turtle + Reckless Charge is a very low-investment 4/4. WB midrange using Guided Strike + Krovikan or Sengir Vampire & other goodies.

GB midrange with Untamed Wilds for ramp, Juzam Djinn + Run Wild for beats. RW lifegain combo with Retromancer + Spiritualize (multiple Spititualizes stack). GW "super elf", pumping a back-row Llanowar Elf with stacked Giant Growth + Spiritualize + a Guided Strike before sending him forward with Run Wild. GW beatdown with Suntail Hawk, Elvish Warrior, Giant Growth, Guided Strike, Warriors Honor. There are a bunch of decks I remember being solid & fun: Killing your own wounded 1 toughness guys to get the mana shards can be worth it. Don't hold block any longer than you have to. If you can apply pressure and your enemy is in the back half of his side, you can steal his mana orbs and get a nice boost. Spend as little mana as possible answering enemy threats, and try to kill things on your side of the field to get the mana shards. That said, the game is all about tempo and mana management. To this day, there are still card names that I always "hear" in the various character's voices whenever I read them. I used to play this game a LOT with a group of friends.
